River Morda Environmental Scheme

Improving the River Morda and Weir Brook.

The Melverley Internal Drainage Board (IDB) has embarked on a new project which is set to bring environmental improvements to the River Morda and Weir Brook catchment. Backed by funding from the Environment Agency, Environmental Statutory Allowance (ESA), this initiative aims to enhance water quality and create new and improved habitats for wildlife.

The ecological status of the River Morda is currently rated as “Moderate,” with challenges like high phosphate levels and physical modifications caused by previous flood management activities. Through the project, farmers and the IDB will investigate ways to introduce environmental improvements while maintaining essential flood risk management.

This project is a significant step for the IDB who will trial new approaches to delivering their statutory drainage requirements and have received Environment Agency funding for environmental improvements for the first time.

If you farm within the Morda or Weir Brook catchment and would like more information on becoming involved in the project, please contact Kate Mayne for more information.
